N2 - The Authors describe the advantages of prevention and prompt control of postoperative pain in the elder patients in relation of the respiratory, neuroendocrine and hematologic risk related to the reduced mobility of those patients. The therapeutical choice is based on the surgery performed, intravenous anesthesia is preferred in abdominal surgery and epidural anesthesia is preferred in orthopedic and urologic surgery. In a retrospective analysis of 284 patient, evaluation of the Visual Analogue Scale, as a measure of postoperative pain, showed a good control of pain in nearly all patients and no significative difference was reported between PCA and continuous infusion.
