Abstract

One hundred twenty-eight patients operated on for supratentorial tumors with (65 cases) and without (63 cases) preoperative seizures entered the study. The aim was to evaluate the possible risk factors for postoperative epilepsy and the opportunity of a preventive treatment with AEDs in patients without preoperative seizures. Tumor site and nature are significantly correlated with pre- and postoperative seizure occurrence. The efficacy of AEDs prophylaxis is discussed in relation with the considered risk factors, occurrence of seizures and side effects. AEDs prophylaxis is not to be used indiscriminately since there are no significant differences in postoperative seizure occurrence between treated and non treated patients.
