Abstract

Objective: A knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) study was performed on gynaecologists to determine their practices in prescribing prenatal testing for Toxoplasmosis and how they interpret the results. Methods: A standardized questionnaire was administered to a systematic sample of 427 gynaecologists selected from the General List of the Naples Medical Council. Results: Virtually all Obstetricians-Gynaecologists routinely screened their pregnant patients, and 44 percent once during pregnancy, independently of their susceptibility to primary Toxoplasma gondii infection. A total of 23 percent of our sample counselled voluntary abortion in the case of positive IgM result, but only 2.1 percent suggested umbilical cord sampling in-utero to their IgM positive patients. High IgG levels were interpreted as evidence of acquired immunity from 38 percent of those interviewed. Significant variations in responses were found when grouping the sample on the basis of age, seniority in degree, number of patients in charge, practice in voluntary abortion. Pregnancies whether associated or not with Toxoplasmosis, seem to receive not-ideal investigation. Conclusion: Our experience illustrate the need for enhanced education of clinicians dealing with Toxoplasmosis associated pregnancies and for Referral Centers where such pregnancies could be managed.
