The treatment af patients affected by head and neck cancer requests a multimodal protocol including the use of ionizing radiation. The efficacy of radiotherapy causes the involvement of hard and soft tissues of oral cavity and nearest anatomical structures leading to various and severe adverse effects. The dentist, and particularly the dental hygienist have a fundamental role in individuating and preventing these side effects of the radiotherapic treatment and are deeply involved, with the oncologist and the radiotherapist, in the care of oncologic patient. The dental hygienist must be the person able to analyse not only the clinical aspects of the disease but also the psychological side and its relation with the oral hygiene. Most common side effects of rad iotherapy will be treated and a prevention protocol of these sequelae will be proposed.
