Abstract
Newborn babies are frequently exposed to painful procedures and blood sampling is the most frequent one. Recent studies have focused on this aspect and provided useful information. We know for example that blood sampling from the toes is morepainful than i.v. sampling, and that anesthetic ointment (EMLA) is less efficacious when applied to toes as compared to venous sites for sampling. Perception of pain can be reduced by simultaneous administration of sugar, breastfeeding or cuddling. Professionals should know and apply all effective measures for avoiding and relieving pain from blood sampling in babies.
