Abstract
Four new cases of intrathoracic vagus nerve sheath tumours are presented; one of these is a malignant schwannoma. The authors emphasize the rarity of this tumours, with special reference to the malignant type. Neurilemmomas were incidental findings and did not involve the recurrent laryngeal nerve. No problem was found in their surgical treatment. The clinical presentation of malignant schwannoma, on the other hand, was that of a highly malignant neoplasm. The histological diagnosis of these tumours is usually not easy: in the case presented in this paper, the malignant schwannoma was due to the malignant degeneration of a neurofibroma.
