Abstract
Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field that aims at the development of functional substitutes for damaged tissues; adopting tissue-inducing substances, cells placed within matrices, or the association of cells and biomaterials, sometimes integrated with mechanical systems and microelectronic devices. A tight collaboration between physical scientists and engineers as well as surgeons can produce advances in this emerging field.
