Abstract
We assessed the effectiveness of the first AED prescribed in 106 consecutive elderly outpatients with newly diagnosed epilepsy. Sixty-seven (63.2%) patients achieved 1-year-remission. Cumulative probability of reaching a 1-year seizure free period was 52.8%, 60.3% and 62.3% at 12, 24, 36 months respectively. Adverse effects resulted in withdrawal of the first AED in 10 patients (9.4%).
