In 22 patients with malignant tumors scheduled for operation in general anesthesia, the general immunocompetence was assessed by the in-vitro lymphocytic blastogenesis test 3 days before, immediately before, and 2, 4 and 14 days after the operation. On the 3 days before surgery, 11 patients were given 150 mg levamisol daily in a single oral dose. The other 11 served as controls; the anesthesias were matched as far as possible. The findings suggest that preoperative administration of levamisol is followed by earlier normalization of the immunocompetence.
