Abstract
In 59 patients with liver cirrhosis, a marked reduction of prealbumin and an increase of IgA were noted. Treatment with diuretics did not change the pattern of serum proteins. In unconcentrated ascitic fluid, the concentration of individual proteins varied between 13% (α2-macroglobulin) and 26.7% (orosomucoid) of the serum concentration. After a prolonged treatment with diuretics, the concentrations of proteins with higher molecular weights seem to fall (α2-macroglobulin, IgM, IgA) probably owing to a reduction of permeability of hepatic sinusoids or of peritoneal membrane.
