Abstract

Hemodialysis is a severe and chronic condition characterized by passive behaviour on the part of the patient's family. HD often becomes the problematic event that brings the family into a rigid structure; for this reason it is difficult to separate the problem from its effects. In order to study family organization and ask about disease course, emotional impact and role changing, 40 hemodialysis patients and their families were investigated by two psychologists. Data collected confirmed our previous hypothesis: the relational patterns of a patient and his family are mutually influential. Therefore it seems this relational pattern establishes the suffering typical of this condition. Hence a psychological support program has been set up for hemodialysis patients and their families to facilitate and support the autonomy not only of the patient but of the whole system.
