Abstract
Most physicians now realize that the days of ever expanding resources for health care are gone and will not likely return. In the last years many health boards have take an interest in quality assurance tools, to identify opportunities for organizing procedures and improve them in ways that make it easier to respond appropriately and effectively to individual patient needs. The S. Maria Nuova Hospital in Reggio Emilia started in 1995 to apply a quality system to many of its departments, according to ISO 9000 standards. The Author point out the relevant working activities and the steps for implementation of a ISO 9001 quality system in an endoscopic unit. The ISO 9000 series of international standards includes requirements for quality systems which can be used to achieve common interpretation, development, implementation and application of quality management and quality assurance. Quality systems recommend itself for three main reasons, because they prevent quality problems during the process of production, provide a review of the relationship between quality and cost and deeply ingrain principle in medicine of continual learning to improve care. They applied to clinical processes can allow to take ownership of the process of change, rather than have to cope with externally imposed changes.
