Radiofrequency (RF) ablation with cooled needle electrode of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with compensated cirrhosis

Abstract

The efficacy of local radiofrequency (RF)-ablation with cooled needle electrode in 19 patients with compensated histologically proven cirrhosis and with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of less than 5 cm in diameter is assessed. The tumor was detected by ultrasound examination of abdomen during prospective follow-up of patients at risk and was confirmed by ultrasound guided fine needle biopsy. All patients were followed to assess complications, efficacy of treatment and recurrence of illness.
