Rebreathing technique for measurement of pulmonary O2 diffusing capacity in exercising man

Abstract

The pulmonary diffusing capacity for O2, DO2, can be calculated from the kinetics of the exponential approach of alveolar PO2 to mixed venous PO2 during rebreathing. The method could be applied to resting man. The technique was further modified to adapt it to use in exercising subjects by improvement of the evaluation technique of PO2 recording during rebreathing and by administration of an O2 free breath before rebreathing for rapid lowering of the alveolar PO2 to the required level. In two healthy male subjects DO2 was found to increase from resting values of 35 ml/min-1 torr-1 up to 120 ml/min-1 torr-1 when the O2 uptake was increased 8 fold by bicycle ergometer exercise.
