The most recently published studies on linkage analysis of Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy provide the evidence of a gene locus on chromosome 6p. A 2-locus model where one of the loci is dominantly inherited and the other recessively inherited, is suggested by the segregation analysis. The GAERS strain of Wistar rats, presenting with spike and waves discharges associated with absence-like seizures has been studied by in vivo and in vitro recordings. A crucial role in generation of spike waves is attributed to the Ca2+ dependent oscillatory properties of the nucleus reticularis thalami.
