Abstract
In 2006 the Italian joint SIBioC-SIPMeL Study Group on Diabetes Mellitus elaborated laboratory recommendations concerning the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), in order to harmonize the procedure of this test according to WHO and ADA statements. Despite its large use and importance, the OGTT test is still plagued by poor reproducibility and sometimes is not appropriately performed. Therefore, this document should be regarded as an updated version of the original 2006 recommendations with some improvements and updates, particularly regarding the use of OGTT for diagnosis of gestational diabetes, in accordance to the 2010 guidelines of the Italian Ministry of Health. Moreover, the effects on basal glucose of several drugs have also been updated.
