In the last few years, the pathomechanisms of skin allergies have been profoundly revised. Mechanisms of tissue damage, mostly mediated by cytotoxic CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, have been identified, and the participation of regulatory T cell subsets in the prevention and/or termination of allergic skin diseases has been clearly defined. The current knowledge will strongly promote the development of innovative therapeutic strategies, aimed to stimulate regulatory T cell functions thus preventing the expansion of effector T cells.
