Abstract
A discussion is presented on the modalities and timing of treatment for chronic pleuric empyema in children, based on observation of eight cases of this chronic suppurative disease of the thorax. Aimed antibiotic therapy with drainage of the empyematic cavity is still the elective treatment. Indications for the decortication surgical treatment are when there are no further possibilities of normalisation due to the irreversibility of the pleuroparenchymal lesion. However, for the best outcome of surgery, it is necessary that the acute septic phase is overcome and empyema is well demarcated.
