Abstract
Myocardial infarction causes a loss of cardiac muscle and therefore an impairment of cardiac function. The surviving cardiac myocytes cannot repair the damage, even if they have a minimal proliferative capacity. Based on these observations, cell therapy for myocardial infarction has developed over the last 15 years, both at the preclinical and clinical levels.
