50 samples of water from public swimming pools of Florence were tested. The isolation of mycobacteria from samples was obtained by membrane filtration, decontamination and culture on Middlebrook 7 H 10 agar medium. 42 strains of non tubercular mycobacteria were isolated from 13 contaminated swimming pools ( 59 % of tested ) and were identified by biochemical tests, DNA probes and liquid chromatography of bromophenacil esters of the cell wall mycolic acids.
