The increase of asthma morbidity and mortality may be related to the management of the disease. Educational programmes for asthmatics offer an opportunity to increase knowledge and provide appropriate strategies to manage asthma. A variety of childhood and adult educational self-management programmes have been introduced in recent years. Studies of their use suggest the physician's effort should be addressed at basic asthma management although some individual variations in the management of the disease are required. Asthma self-management programmes are not easy to conduct effectively but further study is likely to produce worthwhile results.
