Risk of pneumothorax after fine needle aspiration of the breast: Italian experience of more than 200 000 aspirations

Abstract

A review of 201 000 fine needle aspirations of the breast from 48 Italian institutions has been performed to determine the frequency of iatrogenic pneumothorax. A total of 19 patients have suffered this complication giving an incidence of 0.01%. The presenting features and precautions which should be taken to avoid this complication are discussed.
