Abstract
The authors present the operative treatment applied in a case of septic pseudoarthrosis of the femoral shaft in a female subject 78 years old. The fracture occurred during total hip arthroprosthesis revision and it was synthesized with las screws and cerclage. A Staphylococcus aureus sepsis arose after surgery with consequent osteomyelitis, fistula and maddy secretion. X-ray examination showed loosening of metal and pseudoarthosis. The treatment involved debridement of soft tissues and bone sequesters, complete removal of the metal inside and refixation by means of a Hoffan external fixator. The surgical treatment was associated with antibiotic therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Healing was obtained, with an excellent functional result, in a year.
