Abstract

The absolute number and the percentage of T and B peripheral blood lymphocytes were determined before transplantation; subsequently, 1 to 3 times per week for several months in 30 kidneys transplanted patients (480 observations) and compared with 158 observations in 40 normal controls. T cells were identified by E rosette formation, B cells by EAC rosette formation and by immunofluorescent staining of surface immunoglobulins. The following results were obtained: nearly normal figures for lymphocyte percentage, but absolute lymphopenia before surgery; consistently low percentage of T cells and even lower absolute number at the time of heavy immunosuppressive therapy; almost normal T cell percentage, but still low absolute number a few weeks after immunosuppression level was reduced; no significant difference in the relative and absolute number of T cells during rejection episodes per se, as compared with the number determined before and after rejection; and significant difference from basal values in the B and T cell percentage distribution during acute bacterial infections.
