Abstract
The possibel relationship between uric acid and other cardiovascular risk factors has been evaluated in a longitudinal epidemiological study at Olivetti factory in Pozzuoli (Napoli). The linear regression analysis showed a significant relationship between serum uric acid and blood pressure values. By adjustment for major confounding variables (age, body mass index, serum cholesterol, triglycerides), statistic significance decreases for diastolic blood pressure and disappears for systolic blood pressure. These data are not consistent with a possible role of uric acid as an independent predictive variable for coronary heart disease. We need further investigations in order to clarify this relationship and its mechanism.
