The pattern of antibiotic use over a two-year period in a sample of Italian hospitals (most of them participating also in the prospective epidemiological survey of severe in-hospital infections reported in the previous section of the Journal) has been evaluated to assess: 1) the degree of overlap between the expected and the observed distribution of use in different wards for drugs indicated for severe infections; 2) the impact of newly introduced agents on consumption patterns. Against a reasonably overlapping of some 'critical' drugs in specialized ward the survey documents that variability is the dominant feature in the field of antibiotic treatment.
