The study of neuropsychological disorders after brain damage may offer an important avenue to the investigation of possible sex differences in brain organization (McGlone 1980, Kimura 1987). Vignolo, Boccardi, Caverni and Frediani (1986) have recently reported that, while the majority of patients with global aphasia have large lesions involving the whole perisylvian area of the left hemisphere, some cases are found with partial lesions, limited to the anterior or posterior portion of the language area or to the deep structures. In the series reported by Vignolo et al. (1986) there was a striking sex difference in these atypical cases: all patients with anterior lesions were female, while all cases with posterior lesions were male. In order to confirm these findings, we have studied an enlarged series of global aphasics, focusing on the relationship between sex and lesion location.
