Abstract
The role of Italian Regions should be based on the main targets of W.H.O. for global Tuberculosis control: 1) To cure at least 85% of newly detected smear-positive patients. 2) To detect at least 70% of existing cases by year 2000. Actually there are some Regions which have already adopted some useful programs of prevention and control of T.b., while others are still on the way. The practical experience of Lombardia, Piemonte and Emilia Romagna has allowed to define the roles of Specialists in Hygiene, Infectious Diseases and Pneumonology in their specific fields, moreover the Regione Lombardia Government has recently indicated the network of specialistic ambulatories devoted to control programs of T.b. and the guidelines for prevention in the Health personnel. It might be advisable that all the Regions which have not yet endorsed specific rules, do it as soon as possible, taking advantage of the previous work. As the best prevention is to detect and cure the infectious cases it might be useful to allow free lab examinations and supply of treatment to all the patients.
