Abstract
SMR shoulder prosthesis system has been the first integrated prosthetic system allowing to use the same uncemented stem or glenoid base to construct a traditional or an inverted prosthesis and recently has been completed with a surface prosthesis for a mini-invasive surgery in young people. Shoulder arthroplasty has evolved over the past decade from the single-piece nonmodular Neer prosthesis to modular anatomic design implants improving the surgeon ability to reconstruct a nearly normal articular glenohumeral anatomy. In order to adapt shoulder prosthesis to the different pathological situations, single implants have been replaced by prosthetic systems including the reverse shoulder prosthesis for rotator cuff-deficient shoulders with degenerative joint or revision of unstable shoulder arthroplasties, prosthesis specifically designed for the treatment of proximal humerus fractures and finally surface replacement shoulder arthroplasties of different design for a less invasive approach mostly in young people with localized damages to the glenohumeral joint.
