Abstract
The morphology and function of the insertion of the semimembranosus is discussed on the basis of anatomical dissection of the posterior compartments of fresh human knees. Particular attention is paid to the posterior or recurrent termination. This fibrous band takes on the dignity of a functionally clearly identifiable structure on a par with the oblique posterior ligament.
