Abstract

Cryoterapy is a technique that found a large consent in the medical and surgical practices. In Plastic Surgery the cryotherapy is an efficient method in the treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids. The laser has entered the plastic surgeons' clinical practice to attend haemangiomas, vascular skin malformations and some skin diseases like keloids. In this study, we have compared the two methods of treatment enrolling sixty patients with sternal keloids who underwent heart surgery. These patients have been divided in two equal groups. Pruritus, pain and psychological discomfort caused by the scar were the reasons that led the patients to consult the doctor. On the basis of this clinical study, we consider cryotherapy as the first choice in the treatment of the sternal region keloids. The use of laser is a second choice in wide regions.
