Abstract
The G. Gaslini Institute, together with six other Italian Comprehensive Healthcare Centers (IRCCS), participated in a national study funded by the Ministry of Labour on the risks in the healthcare sector. The workers of the Institute's 14 laboratories and administrative and technical departments were included in this study. The assessment of the exposure to chemical, physical and biological risks and a study on mortality and cancer incidence were carried out on 989 workers. The results confirmed those emerged from other European studies showing the healthy worker effect as well as an excess for some types of cancer, although not statistically significant, especially because of the sample's size. A study of environmental monitoring was performed on formaldehyde, one of the substances most commonly used in the IRCCS. Demonstrations of multimedia tools for training and information on prevention were also implemented.
