Abstract

In Institute Gustave-Roussy surgery is the first and sometimes the only therapeutic procedure against borderline cancer at the loco-regional stage. However, after a long-term follow up on a series of 1139 patients and a therapeutic trial on extended mastectomy, the trend is towards a less mutilating surgery. Extended mastectomy is applied only to a well-defined and rather small sub-group of patients, and (Patey's) radical modified mastectomy is becoming preponderant. Conservative treatment is essentially applied to small-sized tumours (T1 on mammography).
