Abstract

Presurgical evaluation of the epilepsy surgery program at Bellaria Hospital in Bologna includes: long-term video-EEG monitoring, 1.5/3 T brain MRI, ictal/interictal SPECT, neuropsychological evaluation. 27 out of 45 patients operated on for drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsies have a follow-up of at least one year. Outcome in these 27 patients is: Class Ia, 21 patients; Class Ib, 3 patients (Class Ia + Ib: 89% of patients); Class 2, 1 patient (3.7%); Class 3, 2 patients (7.3%). Post-surgery complications were: quadrantopsia, 2 patients; hemiplegia, 1 patient. Our results confirm that epilepsy surgery can be an effective treatment for drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsies.
