Abstract
A 12-year experience in Temporary Observation (TO) in a Child Emergency Department is presented. During the '90s, the proportion of cases dealth with by TO progressively increased, resulting in reduced number or hospital admissions. The appropriateness and effectiveness of TO were evaluated by several studies. Guidelines for TO were developed and improved over time. On the whole TO was shown to be useful in managing acute disease and trauma in childhood.
