The authors illustrate the primary aims and the phases of activity of the 'Centre for the diagnosis and medico-legal evaluation of post-traumatic headaches and vertigo' of the Istitut of forensic medicine of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' since it began in November 1984, together with data gathered during the initial phase of activity. As far as headaches are concerned, the authors also propose to overcome the present controversial classification criteria by adopting a new classification of post-traumatic headache, based on their experience and adapting the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-III, and indicating, for each case, the appropriate percentage of disability. Finally, the problem of post-traumatic vertigo is confronted with the identification of four basic symptomatic descriptions together with their corresponding percentage of disability.
