Abstract

Modern hemophilia therapy has started at the Maggiore Hospital in 1968 with an operation of major surgery carried out in a patient with hemophilia. Subsequently the Hemophilia and Thrombosis rfautCenter did develop at the Hospital as a reference center for hemorrhagic and thrombotic diseases. The Center has identified and experimented an original hemophilia treatment based upon the administration of a compound (desmopressin) that increases the levels of endogenous factor VIII, thereby avoiding the viral infections linked to the administration of large plasma pool factor VIII concentrates.
