Abstract
Cramps are usually defined as an involuntary, spasmodic and painful contraction, with muscular hardening, clinically evident. They may be accompanied by several neurological, metabolic, endocrinological diseases and electrolytic disorders but also physiological conditions, including pregnancy and sporting activity. Several pathogenetic mechanisms involved can be taken back to CNS, PNC or muscle. Their treatment has to be considered in relation to the pathogenetic mechanisms and the associated pathologies. Pharmacological therapy is necessary if they are frequent or persistent; in fact the stretching is quick and useful. Preventing pharmacological therapy with benzodiazepine is useful. These drugs have been useful in treatment of several cramps and have only few side effects.
