In view of the fact that arrest of the secretion of milk has in recent times become of topical importance because of the changed socio-economic conditions of women, or for aesthetic motives, the pharmaceutical biochemical industry is able to supply artificial milks that are increasingly more like the natural product. For these reasons the authors undertook researches on this subject using pyridoxine for the purpose. The results were obtained from 3 groups of rabbits, of which a first group underwent no treatment and served as a control group; a second group was treated, immediately after birth, with 75 mg of vitamin B6 daily by the subcutaneous route; a third group underwent the same treatment as the preceding group, but this began on the 4th day after birth. The authors came to the following conclusions: 1) there is no doubt that giving vitamine B6 in high doses is able to reduce the first flood of milk, and then its secretion; 2) contrary to what might be expected, the phenomenon was most evident in rabbits in which the treatment was begun after 3 days of normal lactation.
