Lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), ytterbium (Yb) and lutetium (Lu) content was determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis in 16 basal cell carcinomas of patients aged 31 to 87 years. Each basal cell carcinoma was dissected in two parts: one for histological examination, the other for the analysis of lanthanides content. Control values of La, Ce, Yb and Lu were measured in samples from surrounding, healthy tissues coming from the same patients and from the abdomen skin of matched cadavers. The lanthanides content was reduced in every pattern in comparison with the controls.
