Abstract
In Lombardy, a Northern Italian Region with a population of 9,742,676 inhabitants at 1st January 2009, a standard form is used to register all discharges from public or private hospitals. Using these data we have analyzed the discharges from obstetric department in Lombardy between January and December 2008. Rates (N/1000 resident women) and ratios (N/100 pregnancies) have been calculated. During the 2008 in Lombardy we have observed 151,005 discharges from obstetric departments: the 23.0% were among not Italian women. The spontaneous abortion 100 pregnancies ratio was similar between Italian and not Italian women. Otherwise, the induced abortion 100 pregnancies ratio was higher among not Italian women. The mean age at delivery was 31.5 years (32.5 among Italian and 28.5 among not Italian women). The frequency of cesarean section was 28.2/100 deliveries, increasing with maternal age, being 41.5% among women aged 40-44 years. Finally the frequency of operative vaginal delivery was 5.5/100 vaginal deliveries.
