Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse all data on the use of Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) in neoplastic patients as contained in the Italian Home Enteral Nutrition Registry of the Italian Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Society (SINPE). All data refer to the 1992-1999 period; information was collected from 76 Centres distributed all over Italy. Among the 7111 adults receiving HEN, 3690 were neoplastic patients (51.9%). Neoplastic diseases of the head-neck represent the largest sample (51.5%), followed by those of the oesophagus-stomach (33.0%). The mean length of survival was 18.3 months and 13.5 months, respectively. We observed a Karnofsky Index value higher than 40 in 75.9% of the patients, against 55.6% of all HEN treated patients.
