Abstract

The adverse drug reactions are a common emergency in elderly patients. In order to put into effect strategies for primary and secondary prevention of the iatrogenic damage it is necessary to know the drug use prevalence in elderly outpatients who are managed by General Practitioners (GP). The SOFIA study was an Observational Study on Drug Use by the Elderly carried out by the FIRI (Fondazione Italiana, per la Ricerca sull'Invecchiamento). 24 Geriatric Units in Italy were involved in the study. Data on 5515 elderly patients (M = 2519, F = 2996, mean age = 75.0 ± 6.2, range = 65-100) were collected by 132 GP (mean = 41.8 patients/GP).
