Abstract

The Italian League Against Epilepsy (LICE) is carrying on a specific project on the genetics of epilepsy. A Data-Bank of families (74 families) with three or more cases of idiopathic epilepsy was created and the biological material of all the members of the families (to date 25 families) was collected in a DNA-Bank. A collaborative study for the localization of the locus of childhood absence epilepsy by linkage analysis is going on. In the families we had analyzed, we found a concordance of the same clinical form or of a prevalent clinical form in 38.9%, in 36.1% there are two clinical forms and in 25% there are three clinical forms. Clinical subforms of idiopathic epilepsy are supposed to have different genetic expression; for this purpose a specific study on the clinical concordance in twins with epilepsy is started.
