The authors reviewed all cardiac catheterizations and cardiac operations performed in children under age 2 years since September 1976 at the Regional Hospital of Vicenza. In this period 404 patients were catheterized; there were 5 deaths. 192 patients under age two years were operated; 17 died of cardiac failure in the postoperative period, with a cardiac mortality rate of 8.85% and a total mortality of 10.9%. These data suggest that it is possible to treat and also to correct congenital heart malformations early in life with a very acceptable mortality rate. Great importance is attached to correct choice between palliation and complete correction. Only with a judicious application of palliation or open repair using current techniques and with improvement of intraoperative and postoperative management it is possible to achieve better results.
