Technical prerequisites to the obtaining of a useful pulmonary capillary curve is described, together with curve morphologies and pressure values in the normal subject. Curve shapes in mitral stenosis and insufficiency are also illustrated. Attention is drawn to the unreliability of evaluation criteria for the predominance of defects on morphological grounds under basal conditions. Certain pharmacodynamic tests are useful in this respect, since they will show up relatively minor valve defects. These tests are free of side-effects and risk to the patient.
