The rapid, widespread diffusion of laparoscopic surgery has led to the demand for a large number of surgeons to be trained to handle the new technique and many laparoscopic courses have consequently flourished in the Western world, often without adequate quality control. This paper describes our experience of teaching laparoscopic surgery at the Padua University School of Medicine (II Surgical Department) using a course of lectures, live demonstrations and discussion, but concentrating particularly on teaching practical surgical skills on models and animals, followed by active participation in surgical procedures. The course enabled participants to follow the same training schedule as a surgical residency program, providing core training and knowledge and developing technical skills, though in a shorter, more concentrated time span. The outcome of the course was anonymously evaluated by participants: 70% reported that the course had contributed toward their making changes to their usual surgical practice and 30% began adopting laparoscopy. The structure of the course could be taken as a valid example for the training of surgeons on new laparoscopic techniques in Italy.
