To describe our experience in the use of Topiramate as add-on therapy resistant epileptic patients with mental retardation, we have used TPM in 11 patients with symptomatic epilepsy (partial simplex, partial complex or generalized crisis). The TPM was added 50 mg. weekly to reach the minimum efficacy or 400 mg./die as maximum. A bout 63% of patients dropped out before 6 months because of side effects involving cognitive functions. This would suggest a much slower dose increase in patients with mental retardation.
