Abstract
Results of histological, histochemical and ultrastructural studies of 60 cases of pituitary adenomas are discussed together with data available from the literature. A classification of such tumours is proposed which allows a close comparison of their histological, histochemical, ultrastructural and functional patterns. Besides acidophilic (STH and LTH cells), basophilic (ACTH-MSH, gonadotrope and ETSH cells), chromophobe and oncocytic tumours, pseudochromophobe tumours, and argyrophil tumours - made up of cells with small granules of unknown function (P cells) also found in normal human pituitary - are identified. The prognosis of the various kinds of tumours is considered and some data concerning ectopic tumours producing pituitary hormones are reported.
