Abstract
The authors report their experience on the ultrasound monitoring of maturing bone callus in fractures and lengthening of limbs treated with external fixation. Eighty-four patients were studied, with two protocols: one for the rating of the callus and one for the study of the regenerating bone following lengthening. The ultrasonographic examination, associated with the traditional radiological studies, has proved to be a valid method of monitoring the bone callus maturation process, even in its initial stages. This positively influences the decision to remove external fixators and also reduces the patient's exposure to X-rays.
